Growing up, you’re supposed to have role models.  Parents, athletes, celebrities, religious figures…these are the people who are supposed to set an example, a path for you to follow.

For some of us…there were other role models.  Heroes and heroines, villains and anti-heroes.  Saviors of time and space.  Some had super power, or weapons, or technology.  Others merely armed themselves with courage, determination, or the ability to jump absurdly well.

Video game characters.

I grew up wanting to be them.  I would imagine I really was Link, defeating hordes of bad guys and saving Princess Zelda.  I was Samus Aran, bounty hunter extraordinaire, sworn enemies of the villainous space pirates, and the terrifying Mother Brain.  I was Mega Man, Kratos, Master Chief, Sonic the Hedgehog, Ezio Auditore…the list goes on.

The thing is, I slowly learned…I’m not the only one.  There are LOTS OF US out there.  After a life spent learning about fitness, nutrition, personal improvement, and martial arts, I finally set up a refuge.  A place for us all to meet, learn, share, and grow.  Join us.

New blog posts every Monday and Thursday

History:

Be a Game Character was begun as a simple Google Blogger site titled, “So You Want to Be a Video Game Character?” back in the summer of 2011, by Dan “DaRatmastah” Wallace.  It was set up with the intent to motivate, inspire, and aid video game fans to improve their lives, using their favorite video game characters as both an inspiration and a guide.  It was begun with a simple, four-page blog about Ezio Auditore.
Since its humble inception, the blog has attracted an ever-growing audience.  To meet the needs of this audience, Dan purchased the somewhat less wordy beagamecharacter.com, and continued to post new articles, character breakdowns, and videos.  Readers are welcome to contact Dan with questions, comments, or new character suggestions, at any time, by emailing him([email protected]), or leaving a comment on a blog post.

Just wanted to say that I really like your site man. It’s quite entertaining, and I think it is a good thing you got going here. I have seen people on fitness websites ask about getting in the shape of a videogame character and people reply like complete dicks. I am a fitness enthusiast more than a gamer, but I even like the workouts you suggest. Particularly Dante’s workout. And I especially like how you are able to push other improvements on your readers aside from just fitness. Anyway, keep up the good work and much props to you bro.

    Sincerely,
    Willie-T

Thanks, dude, I’m glad you enjoy the site. As someone who was one of those people on a fitness forum a long time ago, I know how that can feel. If you see anyone along those lines, please feel free to send them over, haha. Thanks for reading, AND taking the time to say a good word or two =)

      Dan

Wow, awesome website! It’s a great idea and also a way to get gamers fit 😛 I really enjoy reading these posts as well as watching your fighting videos (you should make more :D) Also, could you do one for Geralt of Rivia from the Witcher games.

    • DaRatmastah says:

Thanks! I want to get back to making videos soon! I didn’t have any free weekends recently to shoot footage due to the whole wedding/honeymoon thing, but that should be changing very soon! On the schedule are a couple more video game combat videos (Dante, Ryu, maybe Kratos), and some workout walkthroughs. I am going to be honest and say I have never played any of the Witcher games, so it might be a little bit before I get to Geralt, but I’ll add him to “the list!”

First off amazing site, hats off to you. One question are you making any routines/Profiles for Altair or Dante from Dantes inferno?

    • DaRatmastah says:

Thanks! Unfortunately, I’m currently pretty jammed up on time (you may have noticed the lack of recent updates). I’m still here, though, answering questions when I can! For the time being, I would say Ezio would be a good analog for Altair, and either Kratos or Connor Kenway/Ratonhnhaké:ton would be a good alternative to a Dante workout. Thanks for stopping by, let me know if I can help in any other way =D

I used to be so unmotivated to work out until I started “cosplaying” as James Vega from Mass Effect. And by cosplaying, I mean that I made Vega workout attire with just a grey t-shirt and black fabric paint, and that got me to the gym. Then, I found some of your workouts floating around tumblr, and that just inspired me even more, and I’ve incorporated those routines into my workout. Thanks for all you do!!

    • DaRatmastah says:

Awesome! I’m really glad I could help!! Good to know my stuff is bouncing around on Tumblr, and that it’s helping people =)

I love this site, I’ve never been motivated to work out, but I definitely wanna do the faith exercises. I was wondering if it’s at all possible when you have time to do a Raiden workout , for the metal gear rising version?

    • DaRatmastah says:

Thanks! You’re actually the first person to suggest Raiden! I’ll add him to the list, for when we get back on track with posting new workouts. I’m glad I could help motivate, let me know if you have any questions/issues. =)

    Keep inspiring everyone

I really love this website! I’m glad it came back and better then ever! I can’t wait to see what characters will be put up here! (Hoping to see Aiden Pearce from the upcoming game Watch_Dogs!) Love you guys!!!

    • DaRatmastah says:

Woohoo! Watch_Dogs looks awesome, there certainly seems like there’s some potential there! =D Glad you love the site so much!

  8. ZombieMan2 says:

I was wondering if you could make a workout for Sly Cooper? He sint reallly buff or anything but he is reeeally agile! Thank you! LOVE YOU GUYS

  9. Timothy says:

Is there any chance of a Niko Bellic or Alexander Nesterov(cryostasis) routines? I have brainstorming going on but some help would be appreciated.

Dude, just found this website and it’s BRILLIANT. I’m having so much trouble figuring out if I wanna go the Faith Connor route or the Megaman route!

Question, though – what’s up with the Patreon? I click over, but it says you’re not a creator and I can’t find an announcement as to what happened! I was very sad – I support most of my favorite webcomic artists through Patreon and I was excited to be able to add you to the list. :-/

    • DaRatmastah says:

Awesome, glad you like the site so much! We’ve got some awesome stuff on the way, too!

In regards to the Patreon, it honestly wasn’t working out that well. We didn’t really hit critical mass, and it seemed kind of silly to have it up for no real reason. That’s not to say it’s gone for good, but at least for now the experiment didn’t work out too well. The Patreon links will be removed in the upcoming site redesign so there’s no confusion. Sorry, but for now, if you want to support the blog, just spread the word! =D Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment!

I have some suggestions for future video game character work outs

    1. Sir Galahad (The Order 1886)

    2. Titus (Space Marine)

    3. Sly Cooper (Sly Cooper series)

    4. Daredevil (Daredevil movie/tv show)

    5. Wei Shen (Sleeping Dogs)

Big fan of your work outs and creativity hope to see these guys up here soon.

    • DaRatmastah says:

Solid suggestions! We’ve had a couple of those already, and I’ll add the ones we haven’t to the list! =D

Hey man, I’ve been following your site for awhile now, still just as good and always getting better, keep up the awesome work.
I’d love to make a suggestion for new characters, Asura from Asura’s Wrath would be absolutely fantastic, as would Vergil from Devil May Cry, Silas Greaves from Call Of Juarez and Jack of Blades from the first Fable. Anyways keep up the great work man.

  13. Gdimc says:

Hey, I absolutly love everything i’ve seen of yours so far. The workouts are awesome. I LOVE the vault dweller workout. I just wanted to suggest it would be really cool if you could do some female inspired video game chacters too. Like the samus workout, or something along those lines. <3 thanks for your time!

Can you make a diet plan for teens 13-18 that will have enough calories and macros to continue growing, but still get lower body fat at the same time. Because on the internet everywhere I see that it says dieting as a teen will somewhat pause growth. Thanks!

    • DaRatmastah says:

I can offer you some tips, but I can’t actually give you a specific diet plan for a couple of reasons. First off, it’s a liability thing, because anyone under 18 is not legally an adult, and I could get in a lot of trouble for giving them diet plans. Second, there’s a HUGE variance in dietary needs for growing bodies. Even if you gave me your height/weight/age there’s still a lot more to take into account for someone who isn’t an adult, yet. ESPECIALLY if I’m writing up a broad post for anyone in that age range.

My recommendation is this: First, try to focus on eating lean protein sources (chicken, fish, lean cuts of beef/pork, tofu,) vegetables (especially green ones,) whole fruits, and whole grains. Cut out candy, chips, juices, soft drinks, sugary foods, and white bread/pasta. Also, record what you eat. No need to get obsessive and count macros/calories, just keep a general log of “Today I ate these foods!” Being mindful of what you’re actually eating, and how much of it, is a very important thing. Following just these guidelines will probably trigger some natural weight loss right away.

Beyond that, however, talk with a pediatrician about this, and they may either help you themselves, or refer you to a dietitian who can also help. Taking care of your body is SUPER IMPORTANT, especially when you’re still growing, so talk to a professional about it who’s actually gone to a school of medicine for it.

I know my stuff, but I also know my limits and my liabilities, and this, unfortunately, is one of them. Thank you for reaching out to me, though, I’d be happy to help you out with any fitness/workout questions.

  15. Peter Punch says:

Hi I was wondering what you recommend I do in my spare time. Normally I play video games which is unhealthy, and I want to find ways I can just stand up and do something other than sit down. And I mean this is like at around night time so ya.

    • DaRatmastah says:

Well, my personal recommendation would be to take the opportunity to start learning something new. Either a new skill, or a new body of knowledge about something (though a skill is more valuable.) There’s literally a world of information at your fingertips through google, youtube, and other resources. Personal recommendations off the top of my head would be learning a new language, learning how to program, or brushing up on your people skills. Pick one thing, and spend 30-60 minutes a day on it. If you spend an hour learning and practicing a new skill every day, you gain the equivalent of a college education in that skill in less than a year, for free!

Thanks for commenting, great question, and good luck! =D

I discovered your site through Reddit and I find it very original. Sinceramente you know League of Legends, I’d want to suggest to “review” my favorite character: Jericho Swain. Web hasn’t lot of stuff about his personality. Thank you!

  17. Gatreh says:

Hey I was wondering if you had any videos on bicycle crunches and oblique side crunches that doesn’t require equipment?

I saw them mentioned in the link workout but I am a complete newbie at working out so it would be great if you had a video demonstrating it!
(Especially since other people like me would have a lot of help from those videos)

I really enjoyed your video on different types of pushups!
