Quit Being Fancy

You know what drives me nuts about fitness and nutrition stuff?  The need to be fancy.  Seriously, so often I run into crazy health food recommendations with all sorts of fancy grains, weird vegetables, and strange fringe “superfoods.”  Now, I’m a culinary guy, so I’m not poo-pooing good eats or anything.  If you want to make fancy-tasting health food because you want fancy-tasting stuff, that’s fantastic!  Go for it!

But don’t think you need to have sprouted grains, activated almonds, and apricot-infused mineral water for breakfast in order to be healthy (no matter what Buzzfeed tells you.)  Guess what?  Barring allergies, your body is basically incapable of distinguishing between that meal, or a bowl of instant oatmeal with peanut butter, a banana, and a glass of tap water (guess which meal is cheaper and less hassle, by the way.)

It’s not just nutrition, either!  There’s, like, a BILLION different workout programs out there (I should know, I’ve written enough myself at this point.)  Once again, people like to get super fancy, or switch between workouts regularly, or try the latest fad exercises.

The person at the gym who just grinds out deadlifts, bench presses, and squats on a regular basis is going to end up in better shape than the one who switches their workout up every week and only goes semi-regularly.  Consistency is, by far, the most important thing when it comes to exercise.

Now, that’s not to say you can’t shake your program up once in a while, of course.  Like I said, I’ve written a whole bunch (some better than others, especially in hindsight.)  But for Brodin’s sake, at least give yourself a solid two or three months of regular exercise on the same routine before you consider switching things up.

Are there a million different exercise variants out there?  Sure!  Should you try mixing new stuff into your routine to hit certain areas you feel are lacking?  Absolutely!  But nailing down the most basic of basics, and then getting them into a solid routine should be your first priority.

Seriously though, stop letting the need to be fancy inhibit your fitness.  Eat real food, lift heavy weights (or run, or do a bodyweight program, or swim, or do your thing,) get lots of sleep.  Those are the cornerstones.  You can micromanage after you’ve got those locked in, if you want.

I’ll see you again on Thursday, with a new character spotlight!  Want to see that new character NOW?!  They’re already up on the Patreon feed!  Remember, for as little as $1 a month, you can live one blog post in THE FUUUUTUUUUUURE!  Plus it helps support the blog, which is awesome!

Live boldly, change the world, and continue to be awesome.
