Summary:  Dante is the iconic main protagonist of the Devil May Cry series.  Brash, confident, cocky, with a flair for the dramatic, Dante is nevertheless a serious threat to the forces of Hell.  The half-demon son of Sparda, said to be the strongest demon ever to have lived, Dante is rather fearless in the strength of forces that would cause most people to wet themselves.  While a bit cynical and stubborn, he will nevertheless fight for the weak and those in need(though he may complain the whole time).  How do we go about becoming such a character?

In The Dante Workout, we’ll take a look at building the body of a half-demon.  Dante’s got fantastic physique, capable of tearing through lesser foes.  We’ll want to build similar power, while working towards a body that is both well muscled and lean, making every ounce of muscle we point on count.

In The Skills of Dante, we’re going to be learning multi-person combat strategies(Dante frequently faces off against more than one combatant at a time), how to fight with a two-handed broadsword, and how to develop a sense of style, in both how you dress and how you act.

in The Flair of Dante, we’re going to take a look at Dante’s somewhat blasé attitude towards conflict, life, and interactions with big scary things.  We’re going to talk about his thirst for a challenge in battle, and how he balances his demonic and human impulses so he doesn’t end up like his brother, Vergil.

Dante is a fun character, and I’m definitely looking forward to the rest of this week.  We’ll continue tomorrow, with The Dante Workout.  Until then, remember to live boldly, change the world, and continue to be awesome.

I’m interested in imitating Vergil’s (original, not DmC) mentality and skill set. Thus far, I’ve kind of been combining your articles on Dante, Sephiroth, and the WikiHow on Acting like Vergil to get a well-rounded set of guidelines. However, this site is a leader in living up to video game role models, and I’d really like to see a comprehensive how-to on Vergil here. His dry sense of humor, his variant of stylishness, his skills with Yamato, Beowulf, and Force Edge, his fitness, his inner discipline, contempt for firearms, warrior’s aesthetic, honor, meditative practices (seems to be doing it before his first fight with Dante), and Beta-Wave type stuff to try to mimic Devil Trigger. I’ve started my own work here, largely derived from yours, but I’d be very interested in what you would come up with.

Ooh, interesting. I like the initiative you’re taking. Honestly my writeups are good, but they’re just a starting point. You’re really taking the character and owning it. Awesome stuff. That said, I will add Vergil to the list, so keep an eye out when I start updating again =D

      • Gilver says:

It’s a starting point, but you really do great in a lot of areas others fail to consider, like how to get closer to a certain character’s body type, how to get not just the mannerisms, but the fitness, which a lot of guidelines completely neglect, because they’re for cosplay or something, rather than the goal of wanting to be like someone who inspires you and makes you want to be more than you are.

I’ll check back often, and if you want any help with your Vergil writeup, I’d be happy to share what I’ve come up with to make the article a slam dunk.

Hey Dan! I’m on my way in becoming a Slayer from DFO (aiming to be an Asura). I’ve already taken steps to enhance my senses, (hearing, smell, smell, then sight) and I’ve been following Dante’s workout because of the similarities. I’ve been learning Short-sword fighting skills along with a little bit of katana quick draw. I’ve had a lot of friends help me out with this, and one suggested asking if you had any tips to help. Any help would be appreciated, even if it’s support, I’m honestly surprised I made it this far! lol 😀

    • DaRatmastah says:

Excellent, sounds like you’re doing a fantastic job on your own already! What areas would you say you need the most help with?

      • Sightless Slayer says:

Woohoo! Thanks for the reply! Areas that need work are actually pretty thin at the moment, maybe more exercises for enhancing the senses? Eating is a pain because I want to eat everything I can, but I’ve gotten a steady way so far. Thanks again bro!
