The Growth of Guybrush

First and foremost, my most sincere apologies for the lack of updates this week.  I think the new ever day update schedule was a bit too ambitious, and has left me burnt out.  I kept trying to sit down to write things, but ended up just hitting a wall in frustration every time.  I think I might scale the update schedule back a bit, to lighten the load.  In that respect, this is the only post I’m planning on writing this week, just to finish out our time with Guybrush properly.  I’ll be posting again on Sunday next, with our weekly fitness update.  I’ll make a decision about update schedule changes then, too.

But for now, onto The Growth of Guybrush Threepwood.

Guybrush has had an interesting transformation over the years of his existence.  Like all characters, he grows through his stories, although in the years and hardware generations he’s been through, he’s maintained a continuity that many characters in other series’ have not.  He hasn’t been the victim of a reboot, his adventures are relatively well chronologically structured, and his character has gone through many different situations that have shaped and altered him over time.

When we first meet Guybrush, he is an aspiring pirate.  More than a bit naive, he charges forward anyway, learning the various skills he thinks necessary for being a rogue of the seas.  Early in his adventures, he seems almost child-like in his understanding of the pirate lifestyle.  Later on, when he finds himself in his first real perilous situation, he puts his own neck on the line to save the woman he loves.

This is just be beginning of Guybrush’s adventures, though.  He goes on to develop a bit of a mean or nasty streak, after his initial brush with LeChuck.  He starts to try to act like how he thinks a pirate should act.  This helps to drive away those he cares about, however, especially his love, Elaine.  It’s only through being a bit humbled through his capture by LeChuck that Guybrush realizes he still needs help and friends to get him through.

After his marriage to Elaine, Guybrush seems a bit more timid and unsure of himself.  This is probably from losing the idea of the initial pirate identity he envisioned for himself.  Through several perilous adventures, however, including one involving his own death, he manages to rediscover himself, rebuilding his own personality as a confident, seasoned adventurer, regardless of what others may think of him, or what a “pirate” should be.

You create your own labels for yourself.  You create who you are as a person.  You are who you choose to be.  On this blog, I try to present you with the tools to remake yourself as you see fit, now how society thinks you should be.  Stand on your own two feet, and be your own person, pirate or otherwise.

That’s it for today.  Again, sorry for the bit of a break.  Sunday I’ll be back, and better than ever(most likely with a new update schedule, as well).  See you then!
